The final NFL team NEFF ratings for the 2022 season are below and we can see that for the first time in the history of the NEFF rankings (back to 2002), the San Francisco 49ers have rated as the best team in the NFL. It was very much a tail of two halves for the 49ers, who had a +7.0% rating through Week 9 before finishing out the second half of the season with a pretty incredible +35.1% rating as they went on a 10-game unbeaten run and should be a firm favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl based on their current form.
The Houston Texans finished as the worst-rated team in the NFL this year with a -20.0% rating. Despite finishing bottom of the ratings, the Texans are the ‘best’ rated bottom team I’ve ever rated, with only the 2006 Buccaneers (-21.4%) anywhere near the Texans’ rating this season. I believe this is indicative of what has been one of the most competitively balanced (or inconsistent) seasons in recent memory.
In terms of the top-rated offenses and defenses, the Kansas City Chiefs graded out on top with the +57.2% rating. Despite trading away Tyreek Hill before the season, the Chiefs still managed to be super-efficient and finished with the 5th highest rated offense I’ve ever seen and only slightly behind their 2018 season (+57.5%). On the defensive side, the Baltimore Ravens finished with the top-rated defense of 2022, finishing with a -29.3% rating. Despite being number 1, this was no great achievement as their rating was the worst top-rated defense I’ve graded, with the 2005 Bears the only ones coming close with a -27.9% rating.
The final NEFF standings for each team’s pass and run defenses to further break down the defensive side of the ball are also complete and you can find those HERE.
