Week 1 Fantasy Football DFS Pick One: Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, or Aaron Rodgers

Which quarterback are you putting in your DFS lineups for Week 1 fantasy football: Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, or Aaron Rodgers?

Welcome to Week 1 DFS. In these weekly articles, I’m going to look at three players with similar salaries on DraftKings and pick the player I think you should add to your lineup for the Sunday fantasy football main slate. In Week 1 we usually see some favorable salaries as the week is set so far in advance so the edges this week are usually easier to find.

To start with we’re looking at three high-priced quarterbacks with strong matchups.

Lamar Jackson @ New York Jets ($7,300)

Back to full health, Lamar Jackson has been a fast starter in previous Week 1 matchups, averaging 26.4 fantasy points in the last 3 opening week encounters. This year sees a trip to face the Jets and a great chance to carry on that trend. In my 2022 projections, I have the Jets rated as the 29th-rated defense heading into the season, definitely a team to exploit in DFS this week. The much talked about Ravens’ receiving corps and its lack of proven commodities may worry some, but with Mark Andrews, Rashod Bateman and the uber exciting Isaiah Likely, along with Jackson’s dynamic rushing, there is plenty there for him to put up some serious points.

Kyler Murray vs Kansas City Chiefs ($7,200)

Like Jackson, Murray has also has good form in Week 1, averaging an even higher 26.5 points over his first 3 years on opening week. His match up with the Chiefs I see as a slightly tougher proposition, with the Kansas City defense projecting as the 22nd-ranked defense heading into the season. This still gives Murray solid upside this week, though Rondale Moore being ruled out and a questionable injury designation for Zach Ertz may limit his passing options if either can’t go, especially with no DeAndre Hopkins for the first six weeks of the season.

Aaron Rodgers @ Minnesota Vikings ($7,000)

The two-time defending MVP is a distant third for me in this trinity despite having the lowest price. Whereas we have some solid idea what to expect from Jackson and Murray because of the high floor their rushing gives them, Rodgers can’t rely on that. He also has the least proven receiving options heading into this weekend, compounded by a questionable designation on potential No. 1 receiver Allen Lazard. The Vikings also boast what I’m projecting to be the best of the defenses these QBs are facing. Rodgers ‘only’ averages 22.5 points over the past 5 years vs Minnesota.

My Pick: Lamar Jackson

Murray may also offer that dual threat upside, but in Week 1 I firmly believe Jackson re-announces himself to the NFL by going off against the Jets and hits that magical 30 point mark to lead off your DFS team.
